Change where you Change

Change Where You Change Campaign

The YMCA is the nation’s leading NONPROFIT organization for youth development, healthy  living, and social responsibility.  The Southern  Prairie YMCA implements programs reflecting these ideals to meet the needs of our community.  Our goal is to provide a healthy and safe facility for all ages.  Younger school age children attend our affordable and fun summer day camp and afterschool  programs. Teens come after school to hang out with their friends.  Seniors and mid-lifers join young adults in land and water fitness classes, take laps on the indoor track, and build muscle tone  in the cardio and weight rooms.  The Southern Prairie YMCA has expanded  program opportunities to generate more activity in our facility.   Our current locker room areas need major renovations to keep up with the pace of our growing community. As a nonprofit organization, we must turn to members of our community for support of our capital campaign to “Change Where You Change”.

YMCA UPDATES

Updates from the Southern Prairie YMCA

The Southern Prairie YMCA is slowly recovering from damage done by the tornado.  We have been able bring back some continuity for members through our fitness classes over at Lincoln School. Members have also been able to walk the halls as a replacement for our walking track.  Next on the schedule is making cardio equipment available. Reopening the pool will be the longest delay.  The pool has been drained and we are waiting on a new dehumidification unit.  This unit is expected to take 16 weeks.  With this we are looking at a possible September 1 reopen date.Only a few months ago, the board announced a “Change Where you Change” capital campaign.  This campaign is to raise funds to remodel and greatly improve our locker rooms.  While the repair to the gym, racquetball court, and pool are underway, the board has decided to proceed with the locker room enhancements.  This will mean we will not have to close at a later date for the remodel and we will have a better Y when we open. While the Y building is closed and we work on repairs and improvements, we are planning a fundraiser called “Goat A Go Go.”  It’s similar to a “Cow Plop Drop”.  The Goat A Go Go is scheduled for June 15 at 6 pm.  Tickets are $25 per block with a $1000 payout if the goat “goes” on your square.  A BBQ, games and Raffle are also planned.  This will be a fundraiser for the YMCA tornado restoration and renovation.  Tickets will be available at the YMCA, Lincoln School and Y board members. The Y wants to thank you everyone for their support of the Y through this difficult time.  We look forward to serving you in our temporary home and back here at the new and improved Y.Frequently Asked Questions about the YMCABelow is a list of common questions we have been asked, and as much information as we can provide right now.  If your question is not on the list, call during our office hours (782-9622) or email us at jsteffen@southernprairieymca.com. What will the hours be?  We will keep office hours at the YMCA by phone Monday-Friday 8 am to noon.  Hours at the Lincoln School starting May 21 are Monday through Friday 5:30am to 8:00pm; Saturday 7:30am to 2:00pm and Sunday 2:00-4:00pm. What fitness classes are going on?  All of our land fitness classes moved over to Lincoln School.  We have a new class schedule starting June 1. Check the YMCA website for a current schedule. What about the cardio equipment and weight room equipment? We will have some cardio equipment moved over.  Currently we have two NuStep machines, two bikes and will be bringing additional equipment as it is available.  We are unable to move the large weight machines to Lincoln due to size and weight limitations.  We will be moving over a weight bench and free weights as it becomes available. Can people walk at Lincoln?  Yes, we have measured out Lincoln School and 19 laps in the building are equal to one mile.  You can come during our Lincoln School Hours listed above. Where is Lincoln School?  Lincoln School is at the corner of Peterson and Jefferson.   Is kid care available?  Yes, we have kid care available during our regular kid care hours during several of our fitness classes. What about the pool?  Unfortunately the pool will remain closed until we get a new humidity and temperature control system back on the roof.  Right now our estimated time frame is 16 weeks.  The City pool will be honoring YMCA memberships this summer when you bring your Y membership card.  We will post a pool schedule on our website when one is available.  Swim lessons have been cancelled at the Y but the city is allowing the Y to offer group swim lessons on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in June and July at the City pool.  Registration will be through the YMCA.  Children previously registered for the Y group swim lessons will be allowed to register first and YMCA aquatics staff will be calling parents.   What other things are you doing to the building?  While the building is closed we plan on doing general cleaning and sprucing up.  We plan to paint the cardio and weight rooms, pool area and downstairs hallway.  New flooring is going in downstairs as well as new floors in the gym and racquetball court. The old water heater will be replaced with more efficient system.   The locker rooms will be remodeled this summer. Are there any programs coming up through the YMCA?  Yes.  For boys and girls 5th through 8th grade we are planning a Summer Youth Fitness program aimed to increase their fitness level in a fun way.  This will be at Lincoln School.  The registration deadline is May 29.  Boot camp is in July for those needing an extra challenge.  Swim lessons will be offered in June and July at the City pool. How will I know what’s going on?  Check for updates on the Southern Prairie YMCA facebook page, the YMCA website (www.southernprairieymca.com), Creston Radio and the Creston News Advertiser. What can I do to help?  We would welcome any donations for our repairs and locker room enhancements.
